Time-Based Triggers Are the Wrong Foundation
Time tells you how long a user has been in the app. It does not tell you what they are doing. A user four minutes into a game may be mid-level in their deepest engagement of the session. A user four minutes into a news app may be done reading and about to close. The same time trigger hits completely different moments in both cases.
Event-based triggers solve this. Instead of asking when did the session start, you ask what just happened: level completed, article finished, task confirmed, search results loaded. These are the actual natural pauses where an ad belongs.

The test: if the user just completed their core action and is actively deciding what to do next, that is a natural pause. If they are mid-action, it is not. The navigation tap that moves users forward in the session is usually the right trigger point.

- Under two minutes: one ad maximum at the natural pause. A second ad increases exit rate measurably.
- Two to ten minutes: two touchpoints. One at the first natural pause, one at a later boundary. Persistent banner below UI is viable throughout.
- Over ten minutes: full refresh strategy applies. Interstitials at each task boundary, rewarded at high-value moments, viewability-based banner refresh enabled.
Segment your trigger logic by session length bucket. Most mediation platforms support this. Applying a single rule across all session lengths leaves revenue on the table for long sessions and damages retention for short ones.
How to Diagnose a Timing Problem
- Session time drops within 72 hours of a config change: new triggers are firing during flow states
- Uninstall spikes concentrated in day-two and day-three users: ad load is hitting returning users before they have rebuilt session depth
- Low interstitial CTR vs category benchmark: ads are showing at low-intent moments
- High impressions, declining eCPM: ads are being served to disengaged users, weakening your inventory quality signal
Overlay ad event logs against session stage data. If session stages are not defined as events in your analytics, that is the prerequisite. Without it, trigger optimization is guesswork.

Programmatic buyers bid on engagement signals, not just audience attributes. An interstitial shown immediately after a completed task carries stronger engagement signals than the same ad shown mid-task to the same user.
